The environment is a primary determinant of individual and community health, occupational health nurses, having expertise in toxicology; epidemiology; industrial hygiene; public health, law and policy, are well positioned to lend their voices and expertise to support efforts to improve the environment beyond the work place.  The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) has recently become a Luminary Beacon.  The Luminary website includes the stories of several occupational health nurses who are also AAOHN members and the AAOHN on-line newsletter has started a series of articles that describe some of the efforts of these nurses to educate the community and other health care professionals regarding environmental risks and advocate for safer practices.
