There are many ways you can become involved in The Luminary Project and work for a safer, healthier world.
Share your story - add your voice to the growing community of nurses across the U.S. and around the world who are lighting the way toward safe hospitals, clean communities, and a healthy environment.
Take the National Nurses Survey on Health and Chemical Exposure, an important new research effort to explore nurses' health issues. Research shows that nurses face exposures to an extraordinary array of harmful chemicals, drugs, and other physical agents - everything from disinfectants to anti-cancer drugs, cleaning chemicals and radiation. Some of these are linked to cancer; others may cause birth defects or other health harms. This anonymous survey by Health Care Without Harm and the Environmental Working Group is part of a broad new effort to promote health, healing and sustainability not only for the patient, but also for healthcare providers and the world we all share.
Engage in the Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) program. Nurses are leaders and key allies in environmental improvement initiatives, and the H2E program can provide the tools, resources, and support necessary to make these initiatives a success. From learning how to participate in Product Evaluation Committees and advocate for the purchase of environmentally preferable products, to taking the lead in crafting facility environmental goals and implementation action plans, H2E can help nurses succeed in these efforts by providing the means to educate health care professionals about the connection between human health and environmental health.
